American Airlines Cancellation Policy

What the no-change-fee change really means, the 24-hour rule, and the Basic Economy exception.

Quick answer

American has eliminated change fees on Main Cabin, Premium Economy, Business and First (US + to/from the Americas) — you only pay the fare difference. Free 24-hour cancellation applies to all bookings 7+ days out. Basic Economy stays non-changeable; AAdvantage members can take travel credit minus a $99 fee.

The 24-hour rule

Change or cancel within 24 hours of booking (booked 7+ days ahead) for a full refund to your original form of payment, any fare.

No change fees — with a catch

Change fees are permanently gone on most fares, but a change still costs the fare difference if the new flight is pricier. Basic Economy is excluded from free changes.

Basic Economy

After 24 hours, Basic Economy can’t be changed and won’t refund to your card. AAdvantage members can cancel for a travel credit minus $99; non-members generally forfeit the fare.

Frequently asked questions

Did American Airlines get rid of change fees?

Yes — change fees are eliminated on Main Cabin, Premium Economy, Business and First for travel within the US and flights to/from North and South America. You still pay any fare difference.

Can I cancel an American ticket within 24 hours?

Yes. If you booked at least 7 days before departure, you can change or cancel within 24 hours for a full refund to your original payment.

Are American Basic Economy tickets changeable?

No — Basic Economy can’t be changed after 24 hours, and cancellations don’t refund to your original payment. AAdvantage members can get travel credit minus a $99 fee.

What happens to a non-refundable American ticket if I cancel?

On eligible fares you receive a travel credit for the value (no cash), usable toward future American travel; you pay any fare difference when rebooking.

Does “no change fee” mean changes are free?

The fee is gone, but you still pay the difference in fare if the new flight costs more.
